Expectations in the Art Room
This policy is discussed with all students: There will be two grades for each student, one for performance in art and one for citizenship in art. The citizenship grade is easy. There is no reason that anyone should get a poor grade. The children know how to behave appropriately in school and that is what is expected in my class. What is expected is to: Be Safe, Be Responsible, and BE RESPECTFUL. I want the art classroom to be a place where students can express themselves freely and respect others around them.
The performance grade is also pretty easy, as long as the student follows directions, does his or her best work, and shows a positive attitude! It does not matter if the student is "good" at art or art is not their favorite subject, just as long as they try, and learn to appreciate art.
Consequences (breakage, misbehavior)/Positive Rewards
Consequences: Students will get one verbal warning if they choose to not follow any of the rules. Second time a student breaks a rule, they have chosen to go to sit out for 5 minutes and think. If the behavior is consistent or harming others, they will be sent to a buddy room or receive a detention. I am trying to teach the power of positivity in my classroom and why listening skills, respecting others, and appreciation is so essential in life.
Positive Rewards: I love giving out Stung in Action blue forms to students who are being respectful, responsible, and safe. Those forms go in a raffle along with the whole school and if their form is chosen, they get a reward. I also give out treats like stickers, fun things..etc. to students who choose to follow the art rules or who show kindness to others. I have a sticker chart for each class, and if as a whole the class does a great job for following the rules, they get a sticker. IF they get 6 stickers for a quarter, they receive a free art day/popcorn party. They get to: free paint, listen to music of their choice(school appropriate) and free draw. *I also love to play relaxing different kinds of music, it inspires creativity!
